Sparta the Mean Kitty

The videos above are from YouTube, and feature Sparta. Click on them to watch these clever videos his owner has posted on YouTube. He is an Egyptian Mau, though he looks like a Bengal. (Bengals are a cross between an Asian Leopard cat and a domestic shorthair). In one video, you'll notice how Sparta fetches. (it's because they are VERY smart). I Hope you enjoy these short clips.

Well...it's another Monday.  Last night, we had one big windy dust storm.  My landlord knocked on my door, and we went outside to see the trees bending, and the air FULL of dirt being blown about.  There were even a few branches broken from the big tree in the back.  Today it looks like it'll be a bit cooler and wetter...  Hope everyone has a WONDERFUL week....

Monday: The heat wave snaps…partly cloudy with showers in NE WA & N ID. High temperatures nose-dive into the 70's…Low/High 60°/73.

Stay tuned!   Dave

What's in a name?...
More people give human names to pets
Vowel sounds, syllables important for training
Author: Darlene Dunn, Staff writer KXLY.com

It used to be that dogs were given names such as Fido, Spot and Rover. Those days are long gone."Pets are a member of the family," said Anabel Conner, who has three dogs -- Sheba, Fawn and Ella.

"The trend in naming pets is going toward more human names," said Conner, who is also the community leader of Parents Connect.Parents Connect also provides a database of more than 11,000 dog and 27,000 baby names at PetNamesWorld.com and BabyNamesWorld.com.Conner, who considers herself a name expert, said that in addition to choosing names that are more human like, there are a few rules that dog owners should follow. She said it is important to use vowel sounds and give a name that has no more than two syllables.

"They can really pick up on them. It gets too complicated with more than that, but give a name with a punch to it," she said, because a pet's name is crucial in training.

I didn't start eating cilantro until I was in my 20's.  My mother, who is of Mexican heritage used it in her cooking.  When I first tasted it, I did not like it.  However, over the years I developed a taste for it, and now quite enjoy it a lot.  It adds a different flavor to many foods, but you'll not want to over do it, as it is a pungent herb.
Cilantro: More Than An Herb, It Can Purify Water Too
By Alexandra Sifferlin

The next time you find yourself facing some questionable drinking water, look for some cilantro.

At least that’s what a team of U.S. and Mexican researchers made up of undergraduate students suggest.

The research team, lead by Douglas Schauer of Ivy Tech Community College in Lafayette, IN, along with colleagues from the Universidad Politécnica de Francisco I. Madero in Hidalgo, Mexico, have been studying the region of Tule Valley near Mexico City to identify cheaper ways to filter water. Mexico City has long dumped its waste water in the valley, and the contaminated water is then used by regional farmers to irrigate crops. Once in the edible foods, heavy metals such as lead and nickel can make their way to consumers, where they can contribute to neurological and other health problems. “The organic toxins we can take care of pretty easily with a number of different methods, but the only way to really get rid of those heavy metals is to treat them with filtering agents like activated charcoal (like what’s found in a Brita filter), but those types of materials are kind of expensive,” says Schauer. “They are a little expensive for us to use, but they are very expensive to the people living in that region.”

How Tragic...
I have to be honest and share that I'm hoping the person responsible is apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent the law allows....it's just a shame that the law does not go far enough.  In MY world...the person who did this would suffer the same torture inflicted upon this innocent creature...literally.
Hope The Kitten Makes Amazing Recovery After Horrific Torture, Needs Your Help
Kate.Abbey-Lambertz@huffingtonpost.com

Hope the kitten is a true survivor. And she definitely deserves her name.

She was found near a dumpster by an 85-year-old woman in suburban Detroit. The woman took in the 7-month-old kitten and tried to nurse her back to health. But when she didn't appear to be getting better after approximately two weeks, the woman took her to Tail Wagger's 1990 in Livonia, Mich.

"We opened up the carrier and stood in complete shock," said Laura Zain, founder of the nonprofit. "It was the worst thing I've ever seen in 25 years of doing this. I've never seen something so sadistic, ever."

Emaciated, feverish, with pale gums and covered with fleas, Hope's worst problem was deep, severe burns on her back, sides and ears.

"She absolutely was set on fire," Zain said.

The veterinarian confirmed that Hope had been tortured and set on fire.

Though Zain feared Hope wouldn't make it, she said she could see from the beginning that this kitten had a lively, even invincible spirit.

"I started petting her head, she immediately started purring and kneading her feet and giving me a sign, like, hey, I'm okay."

Hope underwent surgery that lasted three hours, as her caretakers hoped she would pull through. On Friday, four days after she was brought to the organization, she's recovering and has resisted infection.

"She's doing remarkably well," Zain said. "When you go to put your hand in the cage, she picks her nose up right away to touch your hand."

It will be a long road to recovery for Hope: she will need another surgery, if not several more. Zain said it will likely be at least six months before she is ready to start adjusting to home life, and even more time before she's ready to be adopted. But Tail Wagger's 1990 is making sure they have the funds to get Hope all the medical care she needs.

Syria Conflict Indicates Armageddon, Say One Third Of Americans
The Huffington Post  |  By Yasmine Hafiz

Most things aren't really the end of the world, but one-third of Americans who were surveyed believe that the Syria conflict is an indication that our days are numbered. A biblical passage which prophesies the destruction of Damascus and links it to the coming of Armageddon is leading many people to think that the current violence is an apocalyptic omen.
A LifeWay Research poll asked 1,001 people if they agreed with the statement, "I believe the battles in Syria are all part of the prophecies of the Book of Revelation," and 32 percent of them said yes.

Twenty-six percent agreed with the assertion that "U.S. military intervention in Syria might lead to the Battle of Armageddon that’s spoken about in the Book of Revelation."

Gender played a role in responses, as women were more likely than men to draw a corollary between Biblical prophecy and the current situation in Syria.

In addition, one in five people polled agreed with the statement, "I believe the world will end in my lifetime."

The Rev. Mark Hitchcock of Faith Bible Church in Edmond, Okla., speculates that people looking for answers in tough economic and political times "want to know that God is in charge. They want to know that someone has his hands on the wheel," according to LifeWay. Though he believes the Bible does predict future events in the Middle East, the author of The End: A Complete Overview of Bible Prophecy and the End of Days said that he "does not think the trouble in Syria was predicted in the Bible."

It is Thursday, and looks like it will be another hot summer day.  I went to the State Fair yesterday, as I do every year, and had a great time.  Spokane is such a wonderful place to live.
Sunshine and HOT temps as this late Summer high pressure system brings above normal temps across the Inland NW through the weekend. 90°/61°

If you are ready for a cool down...hold on!  A "cold front" will sweep through Sunday night into Monday, bringing cooler temps and a round of showers and thunderstorms followed by breezy winds...flip flopping our WARMER than average temps to COOLER than average through the end of next week.

We are 11 days away from the official start to Autumn!  (Sept. 22)

Cats...
All of my friends know that I am a "cat person".  I've owned (and I hate to say owned) cats for over 30 years.  Their personalities and mine seem to mesh very well.  They are not hyper like a dog, but can be just as needy..lol.  I've thoroughly enjoyed sharing my life with 12 different cats over that time period and would not change it if given the chance to do so. They have taught me life lessons, and given me strength when I needed it.

We've given you plenty of reasons that prove that getting a dog can solve 99 percent of your problems, but if you've been on the Internet in the last decade, you know that cats can weave magic into your life, too.

Something to think about...
I personally don't eat yogurt.  I didn't grow up with it, and never developed a taste for it. But...I know it's healthy for you, and many of my friends swear by it.  Anyway, if you're one of those who eat it regularly, you might want to watch out for this brand...
89 reported sickened by Chobani yogurt
The United States Food and Drug Administration reported Tuesday that it has received at least 89 reports of people getting sick after consuming Chobani Greek yogurt that may have been contaminated by mold.

The reports have not been confirmed and do not represent any conclusion by the FDA about whether the product actually caused the illnesses. Chobani voluntarily removed the product from store shelves after receiving consumer complaints about swollen or bloated yogurt containers.

My view on this is GOOD FOR YOU VINCE.  The world, and our country in particular has no place for such hate filled "Christians" like this.

Country Singer Vince Gill Blasts Westboro Baptist Church Protestors At Kansas City Concert
The Huffington Post  |  By Cavan Sieczkowski

Country singer Vince Gill isn't afraid to confront the Westboro Baptist Church head-on, and that's exactly what he did when members from the hate group decided to protest his Missouri concert over the weekend.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, Gill stepped outside at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Mo., to face down some Westboro Baptist Church members gathered on the sidewalk. The hate group purportedly decided to protest Gill's concert because he is a divorced man who remarried, Country Music Television noted.

The 56-year-old musician was once married to Sweethearts of the Rodeo singer Janis Oliver. After their 1998 divorce, he married Christian singer Amy Grant in 2000. Grant, who has offered support to her gay fanbase, was previously married to Christian musician Gary Chapman.

Apparently, that union doesn't sit too well with the WBC, best known for its anti-gay rhetoric, as well as its unwanted appearances at funerals.

"Vince Gill, what in the world are you doing out here?" a WBC member can be heard asking, in a video of the confrontation uploaded to YouTube. "But, more importantly, what are you doing with another man's wife?"

"I came out to see what hatred really looked like in the face," Gill responded.

"Don't you know that divorce plus remarriage equals adultery?" she asked.

"Don't you know that you f**kers are lucky that you don't have a sign that says something about my wife?" Gill asked. "You know what else [Jesus Christ] said? He said a lot of stuff about forgiveness, about grace. You guys don't have any of that.

What Do you think?
Once again, a fanatical religious zealot, with a warped sense of self righteous indignation, is trying to do something without thinking it through.  Just who does he think he is?  Whether or not he believes others are worshiping the way he thinks they should, is something he needs to deal with in a civilized, respectful manner, if at all.  I can just imagine that if believers in the Quran were to burn Bibles, he would be the first to be outraged.  Come on...can't we just all get along?
Fla. Pastor Arrested Before He Could Burn Qurans
By AP / Tamara Lush

(MULBERRY, Fla.) — Law enforcement arrested a Florida pastor Wednesday as he drove to a park to light nearly 3,000 Qurans on fire to protest the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Polk County sheriff’s deputies arrested Pastor Terry Jones, 61, and his associate pastor, Marvin Sapp Jr., 34, on felony charges as he drove a pickup truck towing a large barbecue-style grill filled with Qurans soaked in kerosene. He had said he was heading to a nearby park to burn 2,998 Qurans — one for every victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Sheriff’s officials said they would hold a news conference later Wednesday to discuss specific charges.

Mulberry’s mayor, along with area elected officials, a sheriff’s deputy and several Polk County residents have talked about the need to express love and tolerance for all faiths on Sept. 11.

And winter is almost here....
I've always been somewhat amazed that people actually suffer from "winter depression".  I find winter with all the snow and gray days refreshing.  It might come from my being raised in the South where we didn't have snow regularly.  In all my travels, I've experienced many different climates, and I find that I enjoy living in a place where we see all four seasons, and all that comes with them.
Winter depression may be less common than believed

SATURDAY, Sept. 7 (HealthDay News) -- Feel the blues in the winter? You might blame seasonal affective disorder, a form of depression that's thought to be driven by weather and the time of year. Now, a new study raises questions about whether this condition is as common as researchers have believed.

"It is clear from prior research that seasonal affective disorder exists," study lead author David Kerr, an assistant professor in the School of Psychological Science at Oregon State University, said in a university news release. "But our research suggests that what we often think of as the winter blues does not affect people nearly as much as we may think."

Kerr and colleagues analyzed the results from surveys given to more than 550 people in Iowa and more than 200 people in Oregon who answered questions about depression over years. Researchers tried to link the answers to changes in weather conditions, such as the amount of sunlight.

"We found a very small effect during the winter months, but it was much more modest than would be expected if seasonal depression were as common as many people think it is," Columbia University researcher Jeff Shaman, a study co-author, said in the news release. "We were surprised. With a sample of nearly 800 people and very precise measures of the weather, we expected to see a larger effect."

People who think they suffer from seasonal affective disorder should get help, Kerr said. Effective treatments include antidepressants, cognitive behavior therapy and exposure to light.

Memories Can Now Be Created — And Erased — in a Lab
By Denver Nicks

Two recently published studies describe scientists implanting fabricated memories and selectively erasing unwanted memories in the brains of lab rodents.

Researchers at UC Irvine have found that by playing a particular tone while stimulating the release of a brain chemical associated with memory formation they can artificially “condition” a response to the tone in lab rats, which is recalled and observable the following day. Fabricated memories have the same features as naturally-occurring memories, Science Daily reports, “including long-term retention.” Researchers say this represents “the first evidence that memories can be created by direct cortical manipulation.”

September 9, 2013

Today is Tuesday, and we are presently having the Spokane Interstate Fair.  Every year, my sister Noralee, provides us with Concert tickets for one of the shows being presented.  It's a great time to get together with family and friends, and wander the fairgrounds viewing exibits and animals.  The weather for today looks like it's going to be very pleasant and a little warm.

Tonight: Mainly clear and quiet. West winds at 5mph. 57°

Tomorrow:  BEAUTIFUL sunny day!  With temps that will be about 10° above average. 86°/60°

High Pressure will continue to strengthen through the week, bringing dry and unseasonably warm temperatures to the Pacific NW.

Enjoy,

Leslie

What's your opinion?
I saw this yesterday, and at first gave the guy kudos for coming forth and proclaiming his guilt.  I didn't at first give any thought as to his motive for doing this.  However, later, many have ascribed some sort of ulterior motive to this confession.  After watching his confession, do you think he's confession is some sort of ruse promulgated in order to receive a lighter sentence?

By Doug Gross, CNN

(CNN) -- Matthew Cordle hasn't yet been found liable of killing a man while drinking and driving, but there's not much question about whether he's guilty.
It's not because of the the homicide charges that were filed against him on Monday. But it's because Cordle went on YouTube last week and told the world he'd done just that.
Cordle's confession, a highly produced, three-and-a-half minute video that has been viewed by more than 1.2 million people, is the sort of pronouncement that would have been impossible before the world had social media platforms at its fingertips. And it's raising questions that go far beyond the 22-year-old Ohio man's guilt or innocence.
Chief among them: Was Cordle, who says he plans to plead guilty and accept whatever punishment is handed down, just trying to get a lighter sentence by using the Web to get out in front of a criminal case in which he hadn't even yet been charged?

Inspiring...
When I saw this story, I was overwhelmed.  It's hard to explain.  I have such an affinity for animals, of all kinds, and feel so very good when I see anyone, especially a child who also possesses empathy and compassion for any of God's little creatures.  The bond these two share is so very special.  I wish all children could have such an experience.

Vadim Veligurov, 12, Forms Adorable Relationship With Rescued Sparrow

In June, the 12-year-old found the lost female baby bird near his grandmother's house in Minusinsk, where he was spending the summer, according to Reuters. The sparrow never tried to fly away. Instead, she stayed by her new friend's side.

Abi likes to prop herself on Veligurov's shoulder. She'll even eat out of his hand and peck him on the lips, the Metro reported.

And since the two are now inseparable, Veligurov plans to take Abi back to his hometown after summer break.

We think this is just the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

So Sad....
It is no secret from those who know me personally, just what my views on guns, and gun safety are.  I respect every American's right to own their firearms, however I do strongly believe that if you are going to own guns, you should be responsible and held accountable for the safety of that weapon...

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. -- Yellowstone National Park officials are investigating after an Idaho woman reported her 3-year-old daughter shot herself with a handgun in a campground.

Park rangers responded Saturday morning to Grant Village Campground, but resuscitation efforts failed, resulting in what officials said was the first shooting death in the park since 1978.

Park spokesman Al Nash said Sunday that part of the campground remained cordoned off while park rangers and special park agents conduct the investigation. He said he didn't know where the girl's body was taken.

"We don't have all of the information, and we haven't drawn any conclusions," Nash said.

He said he didn't know how many family members were camping or where they are from in Idaho. Names haven't been released.

Pet Advice...

I've traveled from the Pacific Northwest to Texas and back, TWICE, with 3 cats in a car. Before starting, I asked my veterinarian for some advice about traveling so far with skittish cats.  He suggested, and prescribed a tranquilizer, in pill form, for each of my cats.  The trip lasted 2 1/2 days, and right before putting them in the car, I gave each of them their pill. They were pretty zonked for the duration of the trip, and travel with them was VERY easy.  I put a litter box on the floor of the back seat, and stopped to allow them to eat.  They slept almost the entire trip. This is something I would recommend if you have to travel any great distance.  I get so disgusted when I hear about people who would rather give up their pets, or abandon them when they move because they are afraid of traveling with their pets.

World's largest airliner: Is bigger better?
By Thom Patterson, CNN

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- Superjumbo, the world's largest passenger plane, has finally conquered the world's busiest airport.
Korean Air kicked off its double-decker Airbus A380 service this week from Seoul to Atlanta, which celebrated Friday with a spectacular ceremony.
Shortly after touching down, Flight 035 slowly taxied to its specially modified gate under a towering arch of water cannons. Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport, which handled some 95 million passengers last year, is now the seventh U.S. airfield able to handle this ginormous aircraft.
But nearly six years after the Superjumbo entered service, it's unclear whether bigger is necessarily better.
