Gay Men Might Be Allowed to Donate Blood

BOSTON--Gay men should be allowed to donate blood and laws banning them from doing so are discriminatory and outdated, according to Sen. John Kerry and several of his Senate colleagues.
"Not a single piece of scientific evidence supports the ban,” Kerry said. “A law that was once considered medically justified is today simply outdated and needs to end."  Read More: Source/TheBostonChannel.com  Blood
I worked for 10 years at a Blood Bank, when this rule about gay men donating blood began.  At the time, it seemed reasonable, with all we did not know about the transmission of HIV.  But now, with all the testing and the accuracy of that testing, it's time for this discriminatory practice to end.

Navy Witch?

Women are so common in the upper ranks of the U.S. military these days that it's no longer news when they break through another barrier. Unfortunately, the latest benchmark isn't one to brag about: being booted as captain of a billion-dollar warship for "cruelty and maltreatment" of her 400-member crew. According to the Navy inspector general's report that triggered her removal — and the accounts of officers who served with her — Captain Holly Graf was the closest thing the U.S. Navy had to a female Captain Bligh.
A Navy admiral stripped Graf of her command of the Japan-based guided missile cruiser U.S.S. Cowpens in January. The just-released IG report concludes that Graf "repeatedly verbally abused her crew and committed assault" and accuses her of using her position as commander of the Cowpens "for personal gain." But old Navy hands tell TIME that those charges, substantiated in the IG report, came about because of the poisonous atmosphere she created aboard her ship.  Read more:  Source/Time.com Dismissed
Power must have gone to this woman's head...PMS maybe? Penis envy? Whatever...I think that she might just have had a big chip on her shoulder. Just my opinion.

Potential Identity Theft?

WFUBMC Patients' Personal Info Stolen
WINSTON-SALEM -- The personal information -- including Social Security numbers -- of 554 Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center patients was stolen from an employee's locked car on Feb. 15, the hospital said Thursday.
The names were listed on a document that was inside a designer tote bag, which investigators said they believe was the target of the theft.
Officials said the employee had taken the document home for work-related reasons, and returned to the car later the next day to discover the bag missing.  Read More: Source/WXII12.com Theft
I think that the employee ought to be held somehow accountable also.  When a person is in possession of sensitive materials such as these, I think they need to be very very careful.   Leaving these documents in a car, locked or not, is negligent, and any person that has their identity compromised should be able to sue.

CBS Sued Over Penis Surgery on "The Doctors" TV Show

A 21-year-old Minnesota man's lawsuit against CBS claims that producers for the network's medical show, "The Doctors," tricked him into appearing on-air for a surgery to remove "pearly penile papules" from his penis.
Courthouse News' Karina Brown reports that Tyler Bowling claims he contacted California-based cosmetic surgeon Dr. William Groff in 2009 about a laser treatment to remove pimples from his penis. Dr. Groff's office, he says, offered the $4,500 treatment free of charge if Bowling would agree to "discuss his condition" on "The Doctors."  Read More: Source/Huffington Post  Penis Show
Oh now...I'm going to have to watch this to see what the hoopla is all about.  What people will do for their 15 minutes of fame.  I don't know why he's suing now, the show was part of his original agreement.  Wonder what Judge Judy would say about this one...

Stolen Historical Artifact Returned to Russia

by King5.com
SEATTLE - A stolen Russian artifact, recovered in King County, was returned to Russian authorities in Moscow on Thursday.
Members of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) returned a silver pendant with an engraved image of Peter The Great, who was the Czar of Russia from 1682 to 1725, to the Russians in a ceremony at the U.S. Embassy.
Ambassador John Beyrle said that what he called the "detective story" of the recovery of the rare artifact signaled increasing trust and cooperation between Moscow and Washington.
The pendant was among 1,200 historical items linked to Peter the Great that were given to the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1947. According to ICE, the pendant had been donated to the museum by the family of Czar Nicholas II.

I love all things Russian, especially Pre-Revolution. I am glad that this pendant was returned to the museum where it belongs, so that many more people can enjoy seeing the history of the Romanov dynasty.

Should There Be an Animal-Abuser Registry?

By Alison Stateman / Los Angeles
Cruelty to animals, it is said, is often a precursor to graver crimes. So would there not be some usefulness to a registry of individuals convicted of felony animal abuse? Legislators in California want the Golden State to be the first to establish such a record — just as California was the first in the nation to create a registry of sex offenders.
The goal of the registry, which would list crimes against both pets and farm animals, is to make it easier for shelters and animal-adoption groups to identify people who shouldn't be allowed access to animals. It would also be a boon to law enforcement because animal abuse, the bill's authors' say, often escalates to violence against people. Abuses covered in the bill would include the malicious and intentional maiming, mutilation, torture, wounding or killing of a living animal. It would also target pet hoarders and operators of animal-fighting rings (such as dog-baiting and cockfighting) who have felony convictions.  Read more: Source/Time.com  Anmal Registry
I think an Animal Abuse Registry is a terrific idea.  I'm a huge animal lover, and would like to also see sentences increased for willful animal cruelty.  Some years ago, I remember hearing of a judge, can't remember her name, but she used to give max sentences to criminals if they injured or killed an animal during the commision of their crimes.  When will we give our domesticated companions the respect they're due?

Coffee is Generally Heart-friendly

By Ed Edelson
Coffee drinkers can take heart from a series of studies presented this week at American Heart Association conferences in San Francisco.
For example, coffee drinkers appear to have a lower risk of hospitalization for abnormal heart rhythms. And there's no indication that having a few cups every day increases the risk of atherosclerosis, the thickening of blood vessel walls that can lead to heart attacks and other problems. What's more, something in coffee other than caffeine might be responsible for a reduced risk of diabetes for women who regularly imbibe java.  Read More: Source/KHQ Health   Coffee
I love my coffee...and am glad to know that it's not as unhealthy as I had been led to believe in the past.  So to all you coffee drinkers, enjoy.
